Soil is a mixture of minerals and organic matter and supports most of a plants life. It is impossible to overstate the importance of maintaining good, healthy soil.

Whether you need to add top soil, composted organic material, soil amendments, or a combination to improve your soil texture and composition, Daniel’s has what you need. We have topsoil available in bulk or bag, several varieties of compost, available in bulk or bag, and soil amendments to condition your soil.

Topsoil

Our natural topsoil is a sandy loam from Troy Missouri. It is good for planting, filling, and replacing clay soil. We sell our topsoil in 40 lb bags and in bulk by the cubic yard. We also have compost available in bulk to enrich your topsoil. Topsoil is not guaranteed to be weed free.

How do I know how much topsoil I will need?

To determine how much topsoil you need the first step is to calculate how many square feet you will be covering, or the area. Different shaped areas require the use of different equations to determine the area.

For oddly shaped beds use your best judgment to break the bed up into shapes that can be measured. Then the area of each bed can be determined separately and added together. Remember, if you have more then one area, always calculate the individual beds separate and then add the areas of each bed to find your total. NEVER add all the lengths and widths together and then multiply to find your area. You will wind up with a misconstrued calculation.

To calculate the area of a rectangle, multiply the length times the width.

(L x W = A)

 Example: 8 x 3 = 24ft2

To calculate the area of a circle, measure the diameter and divide by 2. This gives you your radius. Then multiply the radius x radius x 3.14
(r2 x Π ≡ A) Π ≡ 3.14

Example: 10/2 = 5 r = 5 52 x 3.14 = 78.5ft2

The second step is to take the calculated area and determine how many cubic yards you will need. We sell bulk topsoil by the cubic yard and we can also do half yards. One cubic yard will cover 100 ft2 2-3 inches.

To calculate the number of yards take the area and divide that by 100. Round up to the nearest .5 and you will have the number of cubic yards you need in order to cover your bed.

Example:
24ft2 / 100 = 2.4 This bed would need 2.5 cubic yards of mulch.
78.5ft2 / 100 = 7.85 This bed would need 8 cubic yards of mulch.
